7.4 magnitude earthquake strikes off northeastern Japan, tsunami warning issued

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the Sanriku coast of northeastern Japan on Monday, April 20, at a depth of about 10 kilometers, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. JMA issued tsunami warnings and evacuation orders for Hokkaido, Iwate, Aomori and Miyagi, with initial tsunami heights up to 3 meters expected along parts of Iwate and Hokkaido. Rail services, including bullet trains, were halted and operators such as Tokyo Electric Power began safety inspections at Fukushima Daiichi, Fukushima Daini, Onagawa and Higashidori nuclear plants. Emergency crews are conducting damage assessments while authorities monitor aftershocks and update tsunami advisories.
