Indiana captured its first NCAA college football national championship, with quarterback Fernando Mendoza leading the Hoosiers to the title. Mendoza, a 6-foot-5, 236-pound Miami native, completed 72 percent of his passes and finished the season with 3,535 yards, 41 touchdown passes and six interceptions while winning the Heisman Trophy. The Las Vegas Raiders selected Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. The victory and Mendoza's jump from Heisman winner to No. 1 pick transform Indiana's program history and raise expectations for the school's future at both college and pro levels.
