Pope Leo XIV tells MEPs faith should form political beliefs

newsApr 27, 20261145

On April 25 in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace, Pope Leo XIV told Members of the European Parliament that faith should form political beliefs rather than be used to justify them. He said Christian teaching should form people to listen to the heart, cultivate inner freedom and critical thinking, and that faith and reason do not oppose one another. That guidance echoes wider religious arguments for compassionate, nonpartisan engagement in public life, a theme Buddhist thinkers from the Buddha to the Dalai Lama have long advanced.
