BBC warns a new financial crisis may be coming

The BBC warns a new financial crisis could be coming, pointing to private credit swelling to about $2.5 trillion, rollbacks of post-2008 bank capital rules, and an expanding, largely unregulated shadow-banking sector. Private credit grew from near zero to roughly $2.5 trillion over the past 15 to 20 years, bringing added leverage, opacity, complexity, and tighter links with traditional banks. Regulators reduced capital buffers while rising AI and tech investment and higher energy costs have left fragile economies and policymakers with limited policy space to respond, increasing the risk of contagion and a broader downturn.
