EU trade deal could force UK to limit glyphosate use

newsMay 6, 202621545

The Guardian reports the EU's proposed trade framework could force the UK to restrict glyphosate use on cereal and pulse crops. Farmers currently spray glyphosate to dessicate those crops before harvest to speed drying and ease combining. Campaigners including the Soil Association, Nature Friendly Farming Network, Greenpeace and the Wildlife Trusts are calling for an end to pre-harvest spraying. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans, so aligning UK rules with the EU would change farm practices, supply chains and food-safety standards in trade.
