Pride Month begins, rainbow flags flown at public sites

cultureJun 1, 202616213,784

Cities and organizations marked the start of June by raising rainbow Pride flags at high-profile sites, including Rockefeller Center in New York City and Yakima City Hall in Washington. Groups paired the flag raisings with branded messaging and visuals, displaying Pride versions of their logos and images such as a hand holding a small rainbow flag labeled "happy pride" and a rainbow flag against a blue sky. The displays echo the flag's origin: activist and artist Gilbert Baker created the first Rainbow Flag in 1978 at Harvey Milk's request to give young LGBTQ people hope. These public flag raisings and branded displays matter because they make LGBTQ inclusion visible in civic spaces and signal institutional support for dignity, respect, and equality during Pride Month.
