Maja Chwalinska becomes first qualifier to reach Roland Garros final
Qualifier Maja Chwalinska beat Diana Shnaider 7-6(4), 6-4 to reach the 2026 Roland Garros women's singles final against Mirra Andreeva. The world No.114 is the first qualifier to reach a Roland Garros final and only the third woman in the Open Era to reach the Paris final in her debut main-draw appearance, after Evonne Goolagong in 1971 and Chris Evert in 1973. Chwalinska entered the tournament with roughly $864,030 in career prize money and will collect about $1,624,000 from her run to the final. The final matches qualifier Maja Chwalinska against world No.8 Mirra Andreeva, a first-time pairing with a Grand Slam title on the line.
Maja Chwalinska, qualifier, hotel squatter, tennis magician, is going to the Roland Garros final. I'm too old to get emotional over sports, but, geez ... 🥹
What a brilliant match. I'm gonna watch that one over and over. Maja pulled out all the spells in her wizard book, changing depth, height, spins, and direction to completely flummox Diana Shnaider, who, it should be said, was extremely gracious in defeat. Old-school thinking-person's tennis. Brava!
Fuckn artist. I love her.
Old and bawling here. I love tennis and I love to see a player have a life-changing experience. Go Maja! 😭
