World Cup 2026 cyber scams

sportsJun 8, 2026431,955

Security firms warn scammers are launching coordinated phishing campaigns, fake ticket shops and counterfeit merchandise stores ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Phishing emails and fraudulent websites pose as official sellers and hospitality partners to steal payment details and login credentials, while counterfeit shops sell fake jerseys and overpriced non-existent tickets. Scammers are targeting international travelers and early shoppers in the months before kickoff, using copied logos, bogus QR codes and fake customer-support numbers to avoid detection. Fans should buy tickets and merchandise only from official FIFA or national federation outlets, use credit cards and two-factor authentication, and verify sellers to avoid losing money or exposing personal data.

The World Cup, a tournament I have been obsessed with since I was old enough to know what football is, starts in three days, and I genuinely find myself completely uninterested. The vibes for this tournament are so rancid.

It's hard to get excited for it when you hear reports of an Iraqi player being held for questioning for 7 hours upon arrival in Chicago

Maybe that'll change once the tournament starts, I was ultimately won over by Qatar '22 as a festival of football despite hating so much about the tournament's wider context. But for now I'm finding it so hard to muster any enthusiasm.

I feel sorry for Canada and Mexico having their turn at hosting the world cup ruined by the orange man.

Gotta take a moral stand somewhere. We didn't watch Russia, we didn't watch Qatar and we aren't watching this.

Llanc10

Should have been moved, or cancelled. I despise FIFA and I hope they and the USA make huge losses.

I'm not uninterested. However, I won't be watching - the first time in nearly 40 years. I also am not purchasing any World Cup sponsored goods. I know it isn't much, but it's my small contribution.

Same. Tired of sports always coming with a massive, blood-soaked asterisk.

Same. It’s so depressing. Qatar I ignored until England got to the quarters. It might be the same this time. And next ….. Saudi. The game has been sold out.

I'm planning on trawling the Freeview channels and YouTube for footage from previous World Cups when football was the winner, not corporate greed, dodgy presidents and half-baked threats

I don’t think you’re alone.

Same here. Rampant corruption, collaboration with Trump's authoritarian regime, acceptance of Israel's blatant brutality etc. But the world seems to think this is all ok and is enthusiastically preparing for the football "festival".

Greed and rancour ruin the beautiful game.

Thomas S. Pangborn2

Any organization that provides a fake metal to a fascist dictator just to gain favor while having an event is just disgusting. Republican capitalism has destroyed the us and the world. Greed over humanity. But again, they love the undereducated.

Jackie🇨🇭🇪🇺🇺🇦2

I don't understand how amongst more than 1000 athletes invited to the world cup, not a single one refuses to play.

Iain2

I have exactly the same feeling. Eurovision and the World Cup are not happening this year.

fakes right, goes left2

The stench of poopy diapers and rage bleats in the morning

You're not the only one Hugo. I hope it's a flop and Trump, FIFA and all of the corporates fleecing the loyal fans are made to look like the corrupt blaggers they are
