Federal lawsuit seeks to block UFC fight planned for White House lawn
Plaintiffs in a Virginia federal lawsuit ask a judge to halt a UFC event scheduled on the White House South Lawn for President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. The complaint says the event creates conflicts of interest and improperly uses federal property, and a judge set an emergency briefing schedule with opposition briefs due Tuesday by 9 PM and replies due Wednesday. A Trump-backed super PAC is holding a $1 million-per-person fundraiser the day before the fight, tying private fundraising to the timing of the White House event. A court decision could define limits on private entertainment at the White House and on presidential use of federal grounds.
A federal judge just set an emergency briefing schedule in the lawsuit over UFC fights on the White House lawn. Opposition due Tuesday at 9pm. Reply Wednesday. Ruling could come any time after that. All the details here: open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...
Who would have thought, 10 years ago, that serious people would have to unironically say that first sentence.
Hopefully the Judge didn't get his $1millon tickets so there's a good chance this could be blocked. Clearly, it's a for-profit event, which is 100% forbidden on White House property.
Some additional items that could be added to the White House lawn to fit in with the UFC fights.
Andrew Weissman was just saying on Lawrence’s show that he doesn’t think this lawsuit has much merit for lack of standing.
It would be better if the courts would stand up for things that matter
Please let it all fall apart.
Couldn’t he have just rented a bouncy house?
Imagining Judge Mehta is successful brings me great joy. I can't imagine what this would do to Trump.
Analysis: President Trump is hosting the UFC at the White House on his 80th birthday. It's a conflict-of-interest spectacle, good governance advocates say. Here’s what to know about the event:
He literally owns stock in UFC’s parent company. I’m not a “good governance advocate”, whatever that means. That’s a conflict-of-interest. That’s the straight up textbook definition.
It’s also tasteless, you can always count on trump to do something despicable.
Thanks for this analysis. I appreciate it
