Bird Of The Day, alt theme 'Robins'

natureJun 9, 202645618,226

Bird Of The Day is a weekly community bird-photo prompt; today's main theme is Geese and the alt theme is Robins, tag your posts with #ForJanet to join. The gallery mixes field and backyard photography, a few zoo portraits, and some synth art, with entries showing geese flocks, intimate robin shots, and shorebird behavior. Concrete highlights include a European Robin perched in a rose bush in County Galway, a Victoria Crowned Pigeon posing and preening at the Minnesota Zoo, and multiple Canada goose family scenes on tidal estuaries. Also look for a black-necked stilt mid-preen, a Steller's Jay scanning a backyard, and an AI-generated Plumbeous Water Redstart image.

Close-up photograph of a European robin standing among short green grass, holding a curved blade of grass in its beak. The bird’s bright orange-red face and breast glow in warm sunlight, contrasting with its grey-brown back and pale belly. A dark, softly blurred background creates strong separation, drawing attention to the robin’s glossy eye and fine feather detail.

Tall, elegant black and white wading bird with long black beak and rather improbably long and thin bright pink legs. It is standing in shallow water at the sandy edge of a slough pond in profile with its head bowed and beak touching its white chest. The water behind has a silver metallic sheen with a bit of floating green algae.

An Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca) is walking along a rain-soaked path. This species is native to Africa and is characterised by its distinctive eye markings and brown patches on its breast. In Central Europe, it is considered an invasive species that is spreading rapidly and can be aggressive towards other waterbirds.

A magpie standing in snow with stunning mountains in the distance behind it. The magpie has a black head, upper breast, wings, beak, eyes, and legs with a white belly. It's facing toward the camera with the head turned to the right. There's a cement curb directly behind it and a pine tree a little behind that on the left side. The mountains are dusted with snow and the lower ones have pine trees. The sky is mostly cloudy with a bit of blue in the top right corner.

A family of five Canada geese stands on a light gray concrete sidewalk. In the foreground, three fuzzy, olive-brown goslings are huddled together, tilting their heads down toward the ground as if foraging. Slightly behind them and in the center of the frame, an adult goose walks toward the viewer with its large webbed feet visible, while a second adult stands further back, looking off to the right. Both adult geese feature the species' characteristic long black necks, white cheek patches, and mottled brown bodies. To the left, a dark metal fence runs alongside a patch of mulch and grass, bordering the path.

Photo by Kort Duce A territorial red-winged blackbird attacks a Canada goose at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal color photograph, a Canada goose fills the frame as it swims toward the camera in three-quarter right profile. The water surrounding the goose churns like the wake of a motorboat as it desperately tries to shake a red-winged blackbird from its backside. The blackbird has its claws griping the goose feathers, with its own tail feathers fanned out and its wings up in the air. Red-winged blackbirds are fiercely territorial and will attack nearly anything that ventures too close to their nests. Humans, ospreys, great blue herons, red-tailed hawks, killdeer, and Canada geese are just a few of the species I have witnessed being chased or attacked. On this particular morning, I was walking along the pond bank to photograph a turtle sunning itself on a stump in the water. Several Canada geese nearby began making their way toward the pond when a blackbird suddenly swooped in and landed on one of them. Unfortunately, bushes initially blocked my view of the action. The blackbird, however, seemed determined to stay aboard for the ride. As the goose circled back into the open, I was able to capture a few clear photographs before it finally flapped its wings and dislodged its persistent attacker. I am always amazed when I witness events like this in nature. Most often they occur too far away to photograph, but on this morning I was fortunate enough to document the encounter and come away with a few images of this remarkable display of avian aggression.

A horizontal photo of a Northern Yellow Warbler. The warbler is sitting on a branch that enters the photo in the bottom center and extends to the upper left. The warbler is facing the right. It is completely yellow, with slightly darker feathers on the head and wings. Blurred branches and leaves are visible behind the bird. The sky behind is gray.

A photo of an American robin (Turdus migratorius) perched on a black metal railing in late afternoon light against a blurred green and black background, facing toward the right. It is a large songbird with a brown upper body and orange breast and underparts, along with a streaky throat and a yellow-orange beak. It is standing at attention, the short feathers on top of its head raised, looking alert.
