Trump administration to pay $765M to cancel four offshore wind projects
The Trump administration's Interior Department will pay $765 million to buy out leases and cancel four planned offshore wind projects owned by Invenergy off New York, California and the Gulf of Maine. This is the third buyout of its kind in 2026, bringing federal payouts to terminate offshore wind leases to roughly $2.5 billion. The cancellations halt projects that would have added clean energy capacity, slow U.S. offshore wind expansion, and leave taxpayers covering the cost of abandoning those renewable projects.
