RFK Jr. put in charge of special education programs

newsJun 20, 202612587

On June 19, 2026 the Trump administration transferred federal special education oversight from the Education Department to the Department of Health and Human Services and placed HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in charge of K-12 special education. Disability advocates point to Kennedy’s past public comments about autistic people, including statements that they "will never hold a job" or "will never play baseball", and his proposals to cut services as evidence he is unfit to run those programs. Advocates warn the HHS takeover could medicalize students, shift priorities from education to treatment, and reduce services and federal protections for disabled students. Parents and groups say the change could quickly affect Individualized Education Programs, funding streams, and classroom supports for millions of K-12 students with disabilities.
