Los Angeles declared a local emergency as a cold storage warehouse fire in Boyle Heights burned into a fourth day, sending caustic smoke across the region. The blaze forced evacuations, prompted emergency shelters, and officials briefly issued a shelter in place order that was later lifted as the Los Angeles Fire Department ventilated the facility while crews doused hotspots inside. Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed and California emergency agencies including the Office of Emergency Services and the California Environmental Protection Agency are supporting response and public protection efforts. Air-quality advisories now span neighborhoods from Downtown to Glendale and the San Gabriel Valley, and officials urge people to stay indoors, use N95 masks and run air purifiers because lingering smoke carries hazardous emissions.
