UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expected to resign Monday

newsJun 20, 2026412,626

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to resign on Monday and will set out an orderly timetable for his departure, the Observer reports. He has accepted that his position is no longer tenable after conversations with cabinet ministers, Downing Street advisers, trade union leaders, and party donors. A majority of Labour MPs now back Andy Burnham, and the move follows a string of poor results for Labour, including strong gains by the Reform party in recent council elections. His resignation would trigger a Labour leadership contest and could shift the party's domestic and foreign policy direction ahead of the next national election.

See, USA, this could be us, but y’all playin’.

Republic Of One28

If "orderly exit" means dragging things out until September, thn Labout are living in fantasy land. They need a new leader by Friday and then get on with running the country and ignore calls for an early election from the idiots on the right.

Crimedog17

Classic case of how the skills you need to be a good opposition leader are not same you need to be a good P.M.

Bob Morris12

He reminds me of Schumer here in US Senate. Resolutely myopic and clueless

pave2112.bsky.social11

Maybe they just become prime Minister for the pension and better health care?

Rhonda Stewardson 🇨🇦10

I had hope for him but he has been absolutely terrible and squandered all the hope and goodwill voters had when electing him. Just dire.

Mr Cigarettes9

Add him to the loser pile I guess

constantquestion.bsky.social8

Why aren't prime ministers voted in for a set term? Honestly asking. Seems there is a vote every few months for a new prime minister. We're stuck with our elected officials for years, good or absolutely horrible.

Derek A6

It’s crazy that we left the British Empire because of their king. Now they are changing PM’s every year or so while we’re stuck with our wanna be king.

Valentenya the climate cat 🍉 🐈‍⬛6

Luckily Labour has a "like for like" replacement stored in the cupboard. That'll show the naysayers calling for real change! People just don't understand that realpolitik requires running a country into the ground and violating everyone's human rights. Thank goodness the adults are in control.

The First Millennial6

Reminder that pandering to the fascist right is a recipe for getting your ass handed to you. Please liberals learn this very simple lesson.

He is going to resign to spend more time rooting for Israel’s genocide.

gamercat365.bsky.social4

Wait, didn't he just hang up his coat and sit at the desk

Pop Tartarus4

So does this mean that Labour will be free to go to the left? Like. That they can see that weird Starmerism where it's chasing a center pointlessly is a bad idea and they can just...fix the main problems with the party? The anti trans shit and the like?

Lazlo Toth3

Starmer will not even achieve this middling historical legacy

Andrea3

Bye bye, Kid Starver!! Don't let the door hit ya on the way out!

BirdOnTheWire33

An orderly exit….and we get someone that we don’t know much about, don’t know his policies and someone the majority of us didn’t vote for. Is that how it works in the Labour Party? Can we do this again if he turns out to be not up to the job? Is there anyone else that would fancy a go at being PM ?

Steve Cobb a.k.a. Kunga Tsöndru3

How many failed PMs does it take until they just give up? They've had a dozen of them over the past decades from Boris to that lady who lasted a week, as they've lost their exploitative empire & their relevance has gone the way of the dodo 🦤.

itsmsrobyn.bsky.social2

I think by law, one of the past winners of the annual cheese rolling contest will be named interim leader until an election can be held.

jmatphins.bsky.social2

We could only wish our president would do something so honorable.

annekin1.bsky.social2

Could have led with "but source says he is still focused on the job," rather than Westminster gossip. Did the Observer ask everyone but the PM about the PMs intentions? This is just media shit stirring.

Accountabilabuddy🔻2

I don't blame him for not wanting to be in office when the pedophile's oil crisis spirals out of control.

Marie-Helene2

But is the replacement coming from the same tainted pool of Murdoch’s country house guests?

nichrome77.bsky.social2

Good riddance. What a disappointment. Fascist Lite is not a winning strategy. Decent moral human beings who want a world that belongs to the working people need to vote Green.

pamelapier.bsky.social2

Good. Farage would be unthinkable.

@kwebsterbowerygals.bsky.social2

Imagine that! A guy loses an election and prepares to step down.

Spergin Morlock2

not that I have much room to speak as an American, but the past few PMs in the UK have been thoroughly repellent
