Bird of the Day, theme 'Birds In Their Element'

Bird of the DayJun 22, 20262209,130

A great blue heron hunting along St. Vrain Creek showed the elemental, predatory side of birds at work. Others found nesting and feeding: Atlantic puffins on a grassy, windblown Iceland fjord ledge and an Anna's hummingbird that probed pink sage flowers; the alternate Feather & Light theme surfaced in a magpie's iridescent plumage in a Galway garden.

A sedge warbler perches sideways on a thick green stem, bathed in warm golden light. Its buff-brown plumage, pale underparts and distinctive creamy eyebrow stripe are sharply defined as it stretches its pointed bill upwards towards a cluster of seed heads overhead. The bird’s posture is alert and inquisitive, giving the impression it is carefully inspecting its surroundings or searching for insects. Intersecting stems frame the scene naturally, while a smooth blue-grey background melts into soft bokeh, allowing the delicate detail and character of the sedge warbler to stand out. The overall image conveys a quiet, intimate moment within a wetland habitat.

Photo by Kort Duce A great blue heron hunts along St. Vrain Creek at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal color photograph, one looks across and upstream at the lush green bank of a creek. A great blue heron stands just left of center in the frame, shown in left profile with its neck extended and head tilted downward as it searches the water for fish. The creek flows diagonally through the scene from the middle left edge of the frame toward the lower right corner. In the upper right portion of the photograph, a large fallen log rests along the bank, slowly returning its nutrients to the ecosystem. A shaft of sunlight filters through the vegetation, backlighting patches of grass and causing them to glow against the surrounding greenery. This quiet and beautiful moment captures a great blue heron in its natural habitat, an environment that is vital to its survival.

A white-tailed eagle (sea eagle) flying down to the sea at speed with its legs and talons outstretched as it dives in the hunt for fish. To quote BBC Country File: A white tailed eagle weighs as much as house cat, has a wingspan the size of an average door and can hit 100 miles per hour when hunting! They truly are magnificent birds!

A heron stands in shallow water with a large fish dangling from its beak. Just behind it lurks a large wood stork with its bill open and the tips are in the water. Both are reflected in the rippled water in the foreground. Surroundings are mostly rippled water with hints of grass and reeds growing.

Photograph taken of a robin looking sideways whilst resting on top of a pointed capping stone at the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall. Long green grass in soft focus behind. The light down there is so bright, so it's feet blend in to the stone. Not worked out what to do to sort that or avoid it again, yet!
