I can extend a bit more understanding for hardware, given what AI has done to the cost of parts. I doubt Valve wanted to price the Steam Machine to the point of endangering sales. That said, I resent how much of the cost customers are expected to shoulder. Execs can comfortably tank the damage.

yeah it's not like Valve doesn't have tons of money themselves, they can afford to not increase the price so i'm not buying their excuses. Honestly I always resented Valve for decimating the market for used physical PC games, still refuse to play Half Life 2 on PC for that very reason, fuck em.

I suspect the original plan included one, but since basically everything works via USB these days, I'd wager they're working off the "everyone has five extras sitting around" assumption, since it's definitely not going to be the casuals buying this thing.
