Bird of the Day is a daily community event with today s theme #GreyDay, any bird with grey in its plumage and the suggested alternate theme #ShowingOff. Gallery entries focus on grey-toned species and boast close-up portraits, shore and marsh scenes, and playful moments, with many herons, owls, and wading birds featured. Concrete examples include a mourning dove in Chandler, Arizona showing opalescent pinks and blues, a cheeky heron in County Galway with its tongue out, and a Great Grey Owl photographed at a raptor conservancy in Canada. Look for displays of courtship and territorial behavior, unusual feeding shots like a Dalmatian pelican demonstrating its giant pouch, and proud poses such as a peacock atop a wall at Ruthin Castle.

I have two that come to my front yard, presumably a couple. I have a ground feeder for them and when it runs out they gently coo by the window. Of course, I refill it immediately!

Both males and female mourning doves have a lil iridescent patch on them (males are more flashy though)

Interesting birds, aren't they? I didn't know they perched high on tall trees or my neighbour's roof till recently. If they fly away when you disturb them unintentionally on the canal, the noise they make is like the sound of the Nazgul in Lord of the Rings film!

I don't know why particularly, but this photo struck me as really funny...all the birds anxiously watching/waiting for something...leaning forward with the their bills in a row. They all have such a serious look, but comical with their crests and stances. I love it!
