Chelsea in talks to sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland

Chelsea have opened talks to sign Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, with Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly keen on reuniting with the experienced Swiss. Sunderland insist Xhaka is not for sale despite Chelsea discussions. Xhaka only joined Sunderland last summer and is said to be receptive to a move back to London and to playing under Alonso again. Some reports note Xhaka is about 33 to 34 years old and that Sunderland paid roughly 17 million pounds for him last summer. Sunderland do not want to sell Granit Xhaka, who has emerged as a target for Chelsea. The 33 year old is a hugely influential and valuable player at the Stadium of Light, one who proved to be worth much more than the £17m they paid for him last summer.

Not at all surprised in Chelsea going for Granit Xhaka. Xabi Alonso will want him for two reasons: 1. He’s an Alonso disciple. Will probably move into a coaching role under him when he retires. 2. Alonso wants ready-made players. Doesn’t tend to have time for long-term projects.

In fairness to Xabi Alonso, if he is looking for a cultural reset at Chelsea then a signing like Granit Xhaka makes a lot of sense. Also showed last season how he can still cut it in the Prem. Worth noting Sunderland's stance is their skipper is not for sale, though.
