On June 27, 2026 the Carolina Hurricanes acquired the signing rights to pending UFA defenseman John Carlson from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defenseman Kyle Masters and the No. 192 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The trade paused Round 6 at pick 192 for roughly 15 to 20 minutes while the clubs completed the transaction. Carlson is 36 years old; Kyle Masters is a 23-year-old defenseman and an RFA. Carolina general manager Eric Tulsky and AGM Darren Yorke framed the move as buying the chance to negotiate with Carlson before the July 1 free-agent market; Chris Johnston noted there is no pre-arranged contract in place. Anaheim used the No. 192 selection to take forward Noah Kosick. The Hurricanes now hold exclusive negotiation rights with Carlson until free agency opens, giving Carolina the first opportunity to pursue a multi-year deal or walk away before other teams can sign him.
