Bird of the Day, theme 'Best Of June26'

Bird of the Day today is the community "Best Of June26" theme, asking contributors to post their best bird capture from June. The gallery runs the gamut from coastal seabirds and shorebird chicks to raptors, waterfowl and intimate close-ups, with entries ranging from straight-out-of-camera unedited shots to atmospheric early-morning scenes. Standout examples include half a dozen bald eagles spotted around Blake Island, a Least Tern hen tending chicks, and a Roseate Spoonbill that one photographer singled out as a favorite. Look for nesting and feeding behavior, a noisy close-up of large feet, and misty pond silhouettes, and tag your own entry with #BestOfJune26 to participate.

In 1980 my wife and I flew to Washington State for our vacation. We also visited our old landlord. We arrived in the middle of June, about a month after Mt St Helens erupted. Because of all of the volcanic dust, we had to stay on the Olympic Peninsula. While there we saw a great many bald eagles.

A small brown reed warbler clings vertically to a dry reed stem, looking upward with its slender bill slightly raised. Fine feather detail is visible across its warm brown back, buff underparts and pale throat, while a soft cream eyebrow stripe frames its dark eye. The muted green and grey reedbed behind is beautifully blurred, isolating the bird against its wetland habitat. A few out-of-focus reeds cross the foreground, adding depth and a natural sense of being hidden among the marsh vegetation.

Coming up this season for the NFL is the Rookie Percy 'The Tree Trunk' Puffin, he's pictured here with his shoulder pads on. Now don't be fooled by his size because this boy can cover the ground very quickly, and the paparazzi found this out when they shouted over to him 'Big Boy Come Here' and left out the word 'Please'.
In showing how angry at this he was he set off at some speed towards the waiting paparazzi, who didn't stand around to let him close the gap. And having never spoken to Percy before they didn't know how to take his reaction and thought the best way was to not hang around to find out, but has he got closer to the only remaining paparazzi he burst into laughter while that lone journalist stopped shaking.
And then in the quietest voice you've ever heard said 'what can i do for you, and what do you want to know', which put the journalists mind at ease and only asked him whether he was looking forward to the new season starting on the 9th September, to which Percy replied 'wait and see'
