Maya Joint defeats Serena Williams at Wimbledon

Twenty-year-old Australian Maya Joint beat Serena Williams 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3 in Williams’s first professional singles match in nearly four years at Wimbledon. Joint closed out a three-set match on Centre Court to reach the second round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career. Serena, 44, rallied to take the second set in a tiebreak but Joint regrouped in the third, winning four straight games from 1-2 down to seal the victory. After the match Joint called Williams “such a legend” and said playing on the court was a dream come true. Tournament organisers said Serena will compete in doubles with Venus Williams in a few days.
