Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0 at Estadio Azteca in the World Cup Round of 32 as Julián Quiñones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead in the 31st. The win is Mexico's first men's World Cup knockout-stage victory since 1986, ending a 40-year drought. El Tri recorded 1.02 expected goals to Ecuador's 0.73 and controlled the match through the first half, then held on for the clean sheet. Mexico advances to the round of 16 and will face either England or DR Congo in Mexico City on July 5. Streets and viewing gatherings in Mexico City and abroad celebrated the result.
