Lakers acquire Walker Kessler in sign-and-trade

sportsJul 1, 202644479

The Los Angeles Lakers acquired 7-foot-2 center Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade that will send two unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033 plus first-round pick swaps in 2028 and 2030 to Utah. Kessler will sign a four-year, $130 million contract with the Lakers. As part of the transaction the Jazz will receive a trade exception worth roughly half of Kessler's first-year salary. The deal leaves the Lakers without first-round picks to trade and pushes their payroll to the first apron hard cap; the contract can start as low as about $30.2 million, which would leave roughly $23.1 million in remaining cap space. Los Angeles adds a rim-protecting center to its projected rotation while surrendering long-term draft assets. Utah acquires multiple future draft levers in exchange for a restricted free agent who moves to a contending market.
