Billy Donovan joins San Antonio Spurs as lead assistant coach
Billy Donovan has agreed to become the lead assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs and head coach Mitch Johnson, sources tell me and @PeteThamel. After 11 seasons as a head coach in Chicago and Oklahoma City, Donovan accepts the position with the Western Conference champions.
Feel like this is getting pre-fired.
Reminds me of when Larry Bird reluctantly kept the young, no-experience Frank Vogel after his interim stint. Legend said fine, OK, we'll let you give it a go for a full year — but only if you hire Brain Shaw as your assistant (reportedly). Worked out well for Indy though, Vogel ruled.
Normally I’d assume this is bad for Mitch Johnson but I think Donovan actually wants to go back to college but all the prestige jobs filled up before Chicago officially let him go.
Uh…this is weird. If I was Johnson I’d be nervous.
A lot of people seem convinced this is particularly bad news for Mitch and I gotta say it sounds to me like when your friend who exclusively dates people made entirely of red flags starts telling you he hates your new partner. Work through your own trauma somewhere else first maybe.
mitch is on the clock
Awful, awful. Because if on day Johnson gets fired, that means he'll be there. Ooh, here I am, centrist fraud, I've stuck around, I'm the one who's going to become the new head coach. No, no, it's genuinely awful. Fuck, I'm so sick of that fake brain.
