The Anaheim Ducks matched the Philadelphia Flyers' five-year, $90 million offer sheet and signed 21-year-old Leo Carlsson to a five-year deal worth $18 million per season, making him the highest-paid player in the NHL. The Flyers tendered the offer sheet on July 3; because Carlsson was a restricted free agent Anaheim retained matching rights and chose to keep him. Carlsson learned he would remain in Anaheim just minutes before the match became official and said in a press conference that Anaheim is his home, that the past week had been a shock especially because of the salary number, and that teammates were supportive. Carlsson posted 67 points in 70 NHL games this season and Anaheim has viewed him since the 2023 draft as a player to build the team around. Carlsson acknowledged the extra pressure from the contract but said he has felt pressure since being drafted second overall and that he can handle it. The match secures Carlsson as Anaheim's franchise center and creates an $18 million average annual cap hit for the next five seasons.
