Severe thunderstorm watches and warnings issued across US regions

The Storm Prediction Center and multiple National Weather Service offices issued a string of severe thunderstorm watches and warnings across the United States, including watches for parts of Georgia and South Carolina until 9 PM EDT and a broad watch covering Phoenix, Tucson, Prescott, Payson and Casa Grande until 10 PM. Local NWS warnings included a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Southeast Pinal and West Pima, Arizona from 8:47 PM to 9:32 PM and a Tucson-area warning until 9:15 PM MST, a Marquette, Michigan warning from 4:53 PM to 5:45 PM EDT on July 12, and a Jackson, Mississippi warning July 12 from 8:35 PM to 9:15 PM CDT listing 60 mph wind gusts. Radar-indicated gusts of 60 mph were reported in Kentucky and Montana warnings, and National Weather Service Salt Lake City reported observed gusts to 70 mph for Iron and Washington counties, Utah, with one SPC watch noting isolated gusts up to 75 mph possible. Warnings cited threats to roofs, siding and trees and prompted a Special Marine Warning off Wilmington, North Carolina and a ground stop at Atlanta airport. The watches and warnings were tied to a hot, unstable air mass ahead of a slow-moving front that forecasters said would fuel additional strong to potentially severe storms into the evening. Multiple NWS offices continued issuing, updating, canceling and expiring warnings as storms moved across states, keeping travel and outdoor plans at risk through the night.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a

* Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
Southeast and south central Arizona

* Effective this Saturday afternoon and evening from 345 PM until
1100 PM MDT.

* Primary threats include...
Scattered damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 75
mph possible
Isolated large hail events to 1 inch in diameter possible

SUMMARY...Thunderstorms forming on the higher terrain in southeast
Arizona will spread west-southwestward into the lower deserts
through late evening, with the potential for merging storm clusters.
Severe outflow gusts of 60-75 mph will be the main threat, though
the strongest storms may also produce isolated large hail near 1
inch diameter.

The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 80
statute miles east and west of a line from 60 miles northwest of
Safford AZ to 25 miles south southwest of Sierra Vista AZ. For a

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

REMEMBER...A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.

weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible
warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce
tornadoes.
