Bird of the Day, theme 'Screen Filler'

Bird of the Day is a daily community event; today’s theme is Screen Filler, a capture where the bird takes up a large part of the image. Contributors are sharing tight, up-close bird portraits and close-range encounters, with some images emphasizing migratory species as an alternate theme. Examples in the gallery include a Barred Owl stare down, a Buff-tailed coronet photographed in Ecuador, and a juvenile white ibis shot very close with almost no crop and calm water. Look for other standout scenes such as a robin in a rose bush, a great blue heron showing occipital plumes, and tiny hummingbirds filling the frame.

So sad they are being "managed", aka "killed", here in Washington State for, supposedly, being invasive and competing with the Northern Spotted Owl. It's logging that imperils the Northern Spotted. Barred are just immigrating.

At the start of a hike on Thursday morning I spotted this beautiful little chaffinch milling around by the upper lake in Glendalough. It was happily chomping away on the morsel by its feet there. I think it was used to being around people as it stayed quite close by, nonchalant almost.
