Bird of the Day, theme 'Triplets'

natureJul 19, 202623312,119

Bird of the Day is running the theme Triplets, asking contributors to show three of the same bird in one image. The gallery leans toward wildlife photography and field shots, with many nesting and shore scenes alongside perched and courtship moments. Standout entries include three male wood ducks, a trio of cygnets ready to explore, and groups of Atlantic puffins posing on cliffs; other notable posts show a Tawny Frogmouth with two chicks and three sanderling foraging together. The alternate theme is Blue, bringing Mountain Bluebird, Belted Kingfisher, and other blue-plumaged birds into the gallery under the same hashtag.

A close-up portrait of a barn swallow perched on the rough, weathered top of a wooden fence post. The bird is turned away from the camera, looking back over its left shoulder, revealing its rich chestnut forehead and throat, glossy midnight-blue head, and iridescent blue-black back shimmering in the sunlight. Its long, folded wings overlap neatly, with the tips of its deeply forked tail just visible below. A tiny pale insect is held delicately in the swallow’s short black bill, likely food gathered for hungry nestlings. The background falls into deep shadow, making the bird’s metallic plumage and bright eye stand out dramatically against the dark backdrop.

A vivid male mountain bluebird perches delicately on the narrow mineral rim of a shallow hot spring at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. His plumage is an intense sky blue from head to tail, with a clean white belly and slender black bill. He faces to the right, standing alert on thin black legs as if quietly watching the steaming terraces around him. The spring water is only a few inches deep and almost perfectly still, tinted pale cream, tan, and faint blue by dissolved minerals. The bird’s reflection appears beneath him, slightly rippled by the gentle flow of water. The edge he stands on is rough and chalky, formed by creamy-white travertine deposits built up over thousands of years by mineral-rich thermal water. The overall scene is peaceful and uncluttered. The brilliant blue of the bird contrasts strikingly against the soft ivory and golden mineral terraces, making him the unmistakable focal point of the photograph. There are no trees or grasses visible—only the sculpted limestone terraces, shallow flowing water, and the solitary bluebird resting in one of Yellowstone’s most distinctive geothermal landscapes.

Photo by Kort Duce A female belted kingfisher fishes while perched above St. Vrain Creek in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, a female belted kingfisher perches in right profile on a dead branch in the upper right quadrant of the frame, her head slightly tilted downward as she watches the creek below for prey. The branch enters from the left near the center of the frame, where a smaller limb immediately angles downward toward the bottom, with several delicate offshoots fanning outward to create a striking sculptural element. The kingfisher's crest is raised, and her head feathers appear damp from a recent plunge into the creek. The background is softly blurred, with riparian trees in varying shades of green and yellow set against a brilliant Colorado blue sky. A beautiful portrait of a female belted kingfisher poised in the riparian habitat that is so essential to her survival.

Three young, fluffy cygnets with light, silvery-grey plumage swim closely together in relatively calm, dark water. The scene is captured from a high angle, looking directly down at the birds. The water’s surface is highly textured, filled with small, overlapping ripples, subtle waves, and gentle concentric rings created by the movement of the birds. The liquid reflects the ambient daylight, showing gradients of deep slate blue, charcoal grey, and darker near-black tones within the troughs of the ripples, with soft, diffuse highlights glistening on the crests of the small waves. In the lower-left foreground, the head and neck of the first cygnet are prominently featured, turned slightly toward the left edge of the frame. Its bill is dark greyish-black, contrasting with its soft, downy head plumage. Its small, dark eye is visible. The bird's long, curved neck arches smoothly down into its body, which extends past the bottom-left edge of the frame. Slightly behind and to the right of the first bird, the second cygnet is positioned diagonally, facing away from the viewer. Its head is completely submerged beneath the surface of the water as it feeds or explores, leaving only its strongly curved, downy grey neck visible, dipping straight down into the ripples. Its oval-shaped body is covered in thick, tufted, wet down feathers that show subtle shades of cream and light grey. Further up and to the right, the third cygnet mirrors the posture of the second. It also faces away from the camera with its head fully plunged underwater, creating a small disturbance on the surface. Its fluffy, light-grey body floats buoyantly, with the downy feathers on its back appearing dry and voluminous compared to its submerged head. The closely grouped positioning of the three young swans creates a natural, intimate diagonal composition across the rippling, reflective surface of the dark water. The image captures a peaceful and authentic wildlife moment in nature.

A photo of three adult cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) peering out from holes in their gourd-shaped mud nests built against the wall and ceiling of a concrete structure. They are passerine birds with pale buffy foreheads, dark blue caps, and deep rusty-orange faces and throats, along with with dark round eyes and short black beaks. The nests, constructed from hundreds of pellets of sticky mud, are packed tightly together in a colonial cluster.
