A vivid male mountain bluebird perches delicately on the narrow mineral rim of a shallow hot spring at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. His plumage is an intense sky blue from head to tail, with a clean white belly and slender black bill. He faces to the right, standing alert on thin black legs as if quietly watching the steaming terraces around him.

The spring water is only a few inches deep and almost perfectly still, tinted pale cream, tan, and faint blue by dissolved minerals. The edge he stands on is rough and chalky, formed by creamy-white travertine deposits built up over thousands of years by mineral-rich thermal water.
