Duane Ward dies at 62, former Blue Jays reliever
The #BlueJays announce that Duane Ward, one of the greatest relievers in franchise history and a two-time World Series champion, has died. Ward was in town ahead of yesterday’s 1992-‘93 celebration and passed away of natural causes, the club said in a release. He was 62.
Is that why Tom Henke was by himself in the back of the pickup? Duane was supposed to be with him?
Damn, sad news. It was easy to take it for granted the luxury of having Ward-Henke for the 8th and 9th.
Wasn't he in the photo Todd Stottlemyre posted just the other night? 😢 What a duo he and Henke were in the early 90s.
May he rest in peace
Condolences to his loved ones 🩵
So young! RIP to a great one! #BlueJays
There was a photo circulating from Friday night with a bunch of the alumni and Duane was in it. This is so shocking. What an absolute nightmare for them to experience this. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved him. 💙
Oh wow so young. Rest easy Duane.
Got lucky enough to have lunch with Duane, Candy Maldanado and Lloyd Moseby back when I worked for CHYM/570 (Rogers stations). Really fun afternoon and they all told great stories. Duane will be missed. Arguably the best Blue Jay reliever ever.
I just keep thinking about how every single one of the Blue Jays vets was supposed to be happy and celebrating yesterday, all while knowing this terrible news. It will forever affect their memories of the day, too. 💔
Just in: Duane Ward, one of the most dominant closers in #BlueJays franchise history, has died at age 62.
That's very sad. I remember he did a lot of community work, Jays Caravan, and baseball camps for kids. RIP.
Duane Ward was probably the best reliever the Jays ever had. First as a set-up man for Tom Henke and then as closer, he was a lockdown guy if ever there was one. What a sad loss.
A legend who was too low-key to be treated as such.
This is not the obituary that I wanted to read today, especially after yesterday. 😥
May his memory be a blessing to those who loved him.
When I see someone pass this young I always look for why. They are just saying natural causes.
#Bluejays just announced that Duane Ward has passed away. Teamed with Tom Henke to form the greatest bullpen combo in club history, but more importantly, a warm, wonderful man. I got to work with him several times on the radio and seeing him was always such a pleasure. Gutted for his family.
No 💔 I've met him a couple times and warm is the perfect way to describe him.
How very sad! The timing of the announcement of Wardo’s death, right after yesterday’s commemoration of the amazing 92 and 93 teams, of which he was such an important player, makes it even more poignant. May Duane Ward’s memory be for a blessing. #BlueJays
Legendary Toronto Blue Jays reliever Duane Ward has passed away at the age of 62 of natural causes, the team announced. Ward appeared in 452 games with the Blue Jays, including an All-Star campaign during their 1993 championship run.
Dude was automatic save for years
So sad. Never understood when discussing a relatively young man passing and it’s from natural causes?
We were at game 6 in '93, and saw him get the win for the World Series. Fantastic pitcher. Condolences to his family and friends.
