Bird of the Day, theme 'Summer Lovin'

natureJul 20, 202623012,485

Bird of the Day is a daily photo prompt with today’s theme #SummerLovin, asking contributors to share bird captures taken during summer. The gallery leans into sunlit, seasonal moments and shore and garden scenes, from fledglings and migratory visitors to hunting herons and backyard songbirds. Standout entries include a pair of Atlantic Puffins at Dyrhólaey, Iceland, a Common Yellowthroat perched in a shady Missouri tree, and a great egret hunting at sunrise amid hundreds of other egrets. Other notable submissions show a Violet-green Swallow at Lake Ilsanjo, a female Belted Kingfisher stretching her wings, and a common merganser with a youngster riding on her back.

A recently fledged Stonechat perches on a lichen-speckled branch against a cloudless blue sky. The young bird has soft, fluffy brown plumage with subtle streaking across its head and chest, warm buff underparts, and rusty-orange highlights on its wings and tail. Its large, dark eye and slightly tousled feathers give it an alert yet youthful appearance as it looks upward, taking in its surroundings. Bright sunlight illuminates the fine feather detail while the smooth blue background isolates the fledgling, creating a simple, striking portrait of a young bird beginning to explore the world.

You see here a beautiful swan reflection in the water from the pond where it was swimming. There was all green vegetation around the pond.

Photo by Kort Duce A great blue heron fishes and hunts along St. Vrain Creek in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal color photograph, the viewer looks downstream and across St. Vrain Creek, where tall, lush grasses and riparian vegetation line the opposite bank. A large fallen tree branch enters from the left side of the frame and extends out over the creek. Perched on the branch, a great blue heron crouches intently as it peers into the water below, searching for its next meal. Smaller branches from the same tree, adorned with green leaves, fill the upper left corner of the frame and partially veil the heron, creating a natural sense of depth and concealment. The gently flowing creek occupies the lower portion of the image and continues along the right side of the frame. A beautiful moment that captures a great blue heron patiently hunting in the rich riparian habitat that is essential to its survival.

A seaside scene on a sunny June day at Llandudno on the North Wales coast. Situated prominently is the cream coloured Victorian Grand Hotel and next to this is a large Ferris wheel on the Llandudno Pier. In the foreground a gull stands guard on the top of a rubbish bin. The sky is blue with many white clouds.

Pied Stilt (Himantopus leucocephalus), at Kedron Wetlands, Brisbane, Australia in Febraury 2022, the SUMMER in the Southern Hemisphere. Oh and it's white bird with black nape and back, black eye, and its black beak is wide open as it stands on its long, long, long pink legs of a tiny mud island in the midst of a lagoon with wet grassland visible in the background.

Sheryl Sand Martin was chatting away to herself when the paparazzi popped out from behind the wall catching her off guard, this wasn't what she was expecting at the start of her day. Sheryl isn't a lover of the paparazzi because the stories they have published about her haven't been good ones, but that was when she was dating Souza Sand Martin from Tottenham Hotspur. And the fact she was chatting to herself will probably make a story about herself looking and sounding stupid, which sometimes isn't far from the truth but she doesn't want everybody knowing that. Captured at Tynemouth Pier.

A great blue heron standing on a boat dock numbered 77 and 75 with its wings stretched out behind it. There is a boat with a white hull behind the bird, and another boat is tied to the dock in the foreground, but on the very tip is visible. The sun is shining on the bird and its yellow eye almost glows.

A very small mostly white and gray tern stands in profile on a muddy and sandy beach. There are scattered tiny snail shells around the terns reddish-orange legs and feet. In profile we see dark spots in front of, and behind, the round, black eye. The beak is a dark brown and black and droops slightly to a sharp point.

A European Robin redbreast perches in profile, facing right, on the arm of a slatted wooden seat at a National Trust outdoor cafe in Kent last week, waiting for a visitor to share their lunch. I might have saved him a few cake crumbs that I would normally have carefully hoovered up. What do you think? The background is that blurred green effect of fuzzy trees that camera buffs like to call bokeh. Camera: Canon EOS 400D digital Tamron 55-200mm lens.
