Blue Sky Art Show, theme 'Big'

Blue Sky Art ShowAug 1, 202650826,414

A broad alpine skyline over the East Pioneer Mountains of southwest Montana delivered the literal, expansive reading of Big. Others found scale in objects and contrasts: a giant typewriter eraser sculpture in Las Vegas made the case for human-made scale, while three tiny people at the base of Seljalandsfoss waterfall in Iceland made the landscape feel monumental.

This photograph captures the East Pioneer Mountains of southwest Montana in one of their most dramatic moods. The broad alpine skyline is still mantled in late-season snow, while rounded granite summits and sharp cirques stretch across the horizon. Above them, the sky becomes the true spectacle: long, wind-sculpted bands of lenticular clouds lie stacked over the range, while a higher veil of rippling cirrocumulus spreads across the upper atmosphere like finely combed silk. Together they reveal powerful winds flowing at different elevations, even though the landscape below appears calm. These cloud formations are common when strong air is forced over mountain barriers such as the Pioneers. In the foreground, pale spring grasses cover the high benchlands, emphasizing the transition from open sage country to dark conifer forests that cloak the mountain slopes. The contrast between the muted earth, brilliant snowfields, and deep cobalt sky gives the range a sense of immense scale and quiet strength. The Pioneer Mountains encompass roughly 2,000 square miles and are divided into the rugged East Pioneers, known for their glaciated peaks and alpine lakes, and the gentler, forested West Pioneers, separated by the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway. The highest summits, including Tweedy Mountain and Torrey Mountain, rise above 11,000 feet.

A fluffy juvenile European robin stands upright in short green grass, its rounded body covered in mottled brown plumage before the familiar adult red breast develops. The young bird gazes upward with a large, dark eye and a slender pointed bill, while its long pink legs give it an alert, inquisitive stance. Tiny white clover flowers and scattered fallen leaves dot the softly blurred lawn, creating a natural garden setting that highlights the fledgling’s youthful appearance and curious expression.

From main picture, clockwise: A European Robin looks to the skies for inspiration while singing top note and sitting on a black metal arch support; a young Great Spotted Woodpecker eyes up the distance he needs to jump to another feeder while sitting on a batch of bird food; a Great Tit hangs on the back of a black metal pole and peers at the feeder that hangs above; a juvenile Robin, still without its red bib, gazes upwards at a bird feeder wondering how it can possibly get up there. One day.

Photo by Kort Duce A great blue heron looks skyward at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, a great blue heron fills the frame as it faces the camera while balancing on its right leg. Its neck and head are turned in right profile, with its beak tilted toward the sky as it appears to study something overhead. The background creates a beautiful painterly scene, beginning with a reflection of the opposite shoreline in the upper portion of the image that naturally frames the bird. The remainder of the background is filled with the pond, which mirrors Colorado's signature blue sky. This elegant portrait captures a moment of awareness and curiosity while showcasing a great blue heron within the wetland habitat that is essential to its survival.

Three cormorants are standing close together on a light-coloured concrete wall. Two of the birds have spread their wings wide out to dry them. The cormorant in the middle is holding its head and beak pointing straight up towards the sky. Its plumage glistens a dark blue-black, whilst the bases of its beak shine a striking yellow-white. The area behind the birds consists of a blurred, lush green bush.

A Long Tailed Tit in Blackthorn bush. The bird is right of centre of frame, in side profile facing to the left with its head tilted upward to look at the sky. Its head, chest, back and left wing are visible while its feet and most of its tail are hidden by leaves. The picture is taken in bright sunshine and the bird and the green leaves are well lit up. The rest of the shot is fresh green leaves and small branches from the bush.

Vertical colour photo of a tall stack of straw bales in a freshly harvested field of corn. It is golden hour at sunset and the field and straw is all sorts of beautiful summer browns. The big stack is 15-20 ft high and stands tall above the field. The sky behind is pale and blueish-purple. There is a green hedge running left to right behind the stack, and a telephone wire doing the same

Roskva is part of the Guardians of the Seeds exhibit at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, Maine, which is the largest botanical garden in New England. The 5 trolls here were created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo and are made from recycled wood and locally salvaged material. The message of the trolls is teaching the importance of our connection to trees, the importance of planting seeds and trees and preservation of natural places. This is from the CMBG's info about this particular troll: "Roskva is the heaviest, hardest, and strongest of the trolls. Every day, Roskva climbs towards the sky, and every year she grows taller and wider. If a troll forgets something, they can always ask Roskva—she counts the seasons and remembers everything that happens around her."
