Bird of the Day, theme 'Firsts'

Bird of the DayAug 3, 202626613,485

A puffin floating on blue water off Matinicus Rock in 2005 anchored a nostalgic reading of Firsts as surviving early files. Others treated it as a first sighting or milestone: an uncropped kingfisher that left the photographer's legs shaking, and a lilac-breasted roller from Chobe National Park. It asked for some of your earliest bird captures.

A small bird perched on a chain link fence with a cyan colored head and bright patterning on its back almost Aztec in nature, in my humble opinion.

A small bird perched on a green suet cage, faces left against a light grey background. It has a narrow black cap & a black eye band through a white face. The breast feathers are light orangish tan & the wing feathers are a slate blue.

A photo from the sea taken around noon in early December when the low winter sun and the low clouds created this golden light. Cormorants appear to stand on water as the skerries are just covered by the tide. Taken with an old Nikon compact, with a tiny sensor, but which gives really nice colors when shooting against soft light.

A European robin stands upright on a weathered stone covered with patches of moss, facing slightly to the left. Its vivid orange-red face and breast contrast beautifully with its soft grey-brown back and pale grey-white belly. The robin’s glossy dark eye catches the light, giving it an alert, inquisitive expression, while its slender black bill is closed. The background is a smooth wash of muted green tones, creating a clean, uncluttered backdrop that makes the bird’s colourful plumage stand out in sharp detail.

A Male Reed Warbler on a thin plant stalk. The bird is left of centre of the shot perched near the top of tall, dried out plant stalk that is bent over at a 45 degree angle with the weight of the bird. It is turned slightly to look right so that its front, belly and right side can be seen. Another plant stalk is vertical beside the bird. The background is an out focus blue sky with two thin, vertical tree branches sparsely covered in green leaves.

Photo by Kort Duce Two male northern flickers face off in a territorial dispute at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, two male northern flickers cling to the trunk of a tree during an intense territorial confrontation. One bird faces the camera, while the other has its back to the viewer with its head turned to the left. The rivals repeatedly squared off, alternating between prolonged stare-downs and brief skirmishes as they pecked at one another with their beaks before eventually tiring and flying away. The background is rendered as a soft blur of green vegetation, isolating the birds and drawing attention to their dramatic interaction. This image captures a fascinating display of territorial behavior between two male northern flickers within the riparian habitat that is essential to their survival.

The piping plover (Charadrius melodus) is a small, sand-colored shorebird that nests and feeds along coastal sand and gravel beaches in North America. In 1986, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service listed the Great Lakes population as endangered and the Northern Great Plains and Atlantic populations as threatened. Their breeding habitat includes beaches and sand flats on the Atlantic coast, the shores of the Great Lakes, and in the mid-west of Canada and the United States. After chicks hatch, they are able to walk within hours, and must have access to feeding areas to feed on marine macro invertebrates.

Vertical colour photo of a Canada goose standing in the calm shallow water of a lake. The bird is facing away from you with its head cocked to the right, in profile. The water it is in is glass-like, reflecting the bird in the bottom half of the scene. There are gentle concentric ripples emanating away from the goose. Clouds are reflected in the water in the bottom half of the shot. The top half reflects the blue blue sky

An Anhinga is perched on a branch at the edge of water. Its long wings are spread wide, showing dark feathers with lighter edges. The bird has a long, slender neck and a sharp, pointed bill. At the tip of that bill, it’s holding something white.
