Bird of the Day, theme 'Little Brown Birds'

Bird of the DayAug 7, 202624612,191

A song sparrow on a ceramic blue bird bath and a Dunnock mid-bath delivered the literal Little Brown Birds: tiny, streaky passerines shown up close. Others framed youth and character with a juvenile European robin on a stone wall; the alternate was Busted (birds looking directly at camera), shown by a pygmy owl staring into the lens.

Photo by Kort Duce A young Cooper's hawk portrait along St. Vrain Creek in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, a young Cooper's hawk fills the frame as it perches on a slanted branch that extends diagonally from center left to the lower right corner. Facing the camera, the hawk gazes directly into the lens, creating an engaging connection with the viewer. The background is softly blurred, revealing green foliage from the riparian forest against an overcast gray sky. This intimate portrait highlights a young Cooper's hawk within the riparian habitat that is essential to its survival.

A close-up portrait of a juvenile European Robin perched on the top of a stone wall, facing directly towards the camera. The young bird has soft, mottled brown plumage with warm golden speckles across its head, shoulders, and breast, lacking the bright red face of an adult robin. Its large, dark eyes and tiny bill give it an inquisitive expression, while its pale pink legs are visible beneath its rounded, fluffy body. The background is a smooth, out-of-focus wash of green, helping the intricate feather detail and gentle colours of the young robin stand out.

A little chesnut-breasted mannikin perched on a wide vertical grass or thin leaf. Its body is facing the right but it's looking right at the camera. The bird has a tan crown, black head and neck, a chestnut breast with a black band at the bottom, brown wings and tail, and a white belly with black spot along the wings. The beak appears gray hair and the eyes and legs are black. The background is a blurred mix of yellow with some blure and a bit of white in the top corner. There's another wilted leaf on the bottome left.

The bird has brown upper parts with dark streaks, turning to pale whitish underparts with black streaks on its breast and flanks. Its head and face are brown with a pale eye-ring and long, slender bill. Meadow pipits have long hind claws, which can be seen under the barbed wire In the foreground, to the right, is an out of focus concrete post, mottled with yellow and white lichen. The barbed wire runs from behind the concrete post to a wooden post in the background, to the left. The rest of the background is the out of focus green of fields

A small male Song Sparrow, streaked with brown and gray. He had a white chest with thick brown streaks that clustered into a central breast spot, warm reddish-brown crown and eye stripes, grey sides on the head, and a dark mustache stripe. This bird landed in a small tree with light brown branches and green leaves that was next to one of the ponds along the walking path. He saw me and looked right at me, so I spoke softly to him and he stayed on the branch. Seen early in the morning at Great Meadows NWR in Concord, Massachusetts.

For the theme. The Pine Siskin looks like one from afar, but on closer inspection , they are quite colorful as I suspect many of the “dull” birds are. 🪶

Photograph of a Cobbs Wren. A rather uniformly brown little bird with a slightly downturned beak giving it a grumpy look. It is sitting on a large smooth pebble behind dried up kelp roots that littered all the beaches in the Falklands. A ground nesting bird, nesting in the cracks between rocks and pebbles above the high tide line, it is only fouond on tose islands that are predator free. Totally disdainful and unbothered by humans wielding cameras.

A horizontal photo of a female red-winged blackbird perched on a dried cattail. The bird is small in frame, on the right third, looking to the left. The scene is brown and tan overall, filled with out of focus reeds and brown cattail heads. The blackbird has a light tan belly that is heavily streaked with darker brown feathers. The rest of her body is brown, with tan highlights on the edge of wing feathers. Around her beak and eyes, the tan feathers become pale orange, with the orange also showing on her upper shoulder.
