Payton Tolle struck out a career-high 14 batters over six innings as the Boston Red Sox routed the Oakland Athletics 13-1. Tolle, 23, recorded the most strikeouts in a game by a Red Sox pitcher age 23 or younger since Roger Clemens struck out 20 in 1986, and his 14 ranks third in franchise history behind Clemens' 20s and Chris Sale's 17 on May 14, 2019. Tolle is 7-6 with a 3.20 ERA, 124 strikeouts and a 1.10 WHIP on the season after making his MLB debut on August 29, 2025; Friday was his second straight start of at least six innings. Wilyer Abreu drove in three runs in the win, which extended Boston's streak to nine straight victories and was part of a run in which the club has won 27 of 30 games. The outing included a high swing-and-miss total, with one report noting 24 whiffs on 84 pitches, and it further cemented Tolle's breakout in his first full major-league campaign.

Tonight was the first time the Red Sox pitchers had 16 or more strikeouts in a game without a walk in a 9-inning game since Sept. 10, 1999 when Pedro Martinez beat the Yankees, 3-1, in the Bronx. He fanned 17. Chili Davis homered in the 2nd then Pedro retired 22 in a row.
