Payton Tolle struck out a career-high 14 over six innings as the Boston Red Sox routed the Oakland Athletics 13-1 on Friday, handing Boston its ninth straight win. Wilyer Abreu drove in three runs in the blowout. Tolle’s 14 strikeouts are the most by any Red Sox pitcher age 23 or younger since Roger Clemens fanned 20 in 1986 and rank as the third-most in franchise history behind Clemens’ two 20-K games and Chris Sale’s 17 on May 14, 2019. The outing was Tolle’s second straight six-inning start and his second double-digit strikeout performance this season, the other coming April 23 against the Yankees. Entering the game still shy of his 30th career MLB start, Tolle is 7-6 with a 3.20 ERA, 124 strikeouts and a 1.10 WHIP on the season. The victory extended Boston’s surge to 27 wins in 30 games.
