Leagues Cup, Tigres eliminate Minnesota United on penalties

Minnesota United held UANL Tigres to a 0-0 draw Friday at Allianz Field but lost the Leagues Cup knockout-round tiebreaker 4-2 on penalties. Tigres finished with 20 shots and only two on target; Kelvin Yeboah and Joaquin Pereyra had their penalty attempts saved in the shootout while Pereyra earlier struck the penalty crossbar after VAR awarded Minnesota a spot kick. MNUFC created several clear chances, Momo Dieng had a 20th-minute header parried by Nahuel Guzman and Anthony Markanich missed a late header and hit the post in stoppage, but failed to convert and remain winless in nine matches across competitions. Coach Cameron Knowles said the performance versus Tigres showed a different feeling from the team’s 2-1 loss to FC Juarez and praised their togetherness; captain Wil Trapp called the result “disappointing” given the chances Minnesota had. Minnesota finishes the Leagues Cup phase with one point (0-1-1) and will play Atlante on Tuesday in a match with no chance to advance, while Tigres move to 0-0-2 and four points in the group stage standings.

Tigres wins the shootout and.... everyone walks slowly forward from the halfway line to shake hands calmly. Genuinely seen bigger penalty-shootout celebrations in training. What a weird tournament. #MNUFC doesn't get the extra point, but I suppose there's no universe in which that matters anyway.
