Bird of the Day is a daily photo theme called No Branch Wood, asking for any bird perched on wood that is not a branch. Today's gallery shows birds using fences, posts, jetties, docks, and wooden platforms as perches. Notable posts include a bluebird sitting on a fence, a white wagtail standing on a wooden jetty, and a pileated woodpecker clinging to a tree trunk. I got the Merlin app a few weeks ago. We have lots of pileated woodpeckers here and you know they are around by the loud noise of their drilling into wood, but yesterday I heard a call I didn’t recognize and opened the app and now I know their call sounds like chuckling!

A brave squirrel approaches a juvenile great horned owl perched on a fence rail just before dusk in Longmont, Colorado.

In this horizontal color photograph, a weathered post-and-rail fence runs diagonally from the lower left toward the middle right of the frame. The owl is perched on the rail in the upper right, with its back and left side facing the camera. Its head is turned sharply to the left as it watches a squirrel walking along the rail toward it.

The squirrel pauses, while leaning on a fence post just left of center, and flicks its tail back and forth while staring at the owl. After this apparent display of confidence, the squirrel jumps down from the fence and runs beneath the owl.

The owl immediately launches in pursuit, but the squirrel proves too quick. Zigzagging through and around the fence rails, it manages to evade capture and disappear to safety.
