Bird of the Day, theme 'Fledglings'

Bird of the Day is a daily event with today’s main theme 50ShadesOfGrey and an alternate theme Fledglings, accepting any newly fledged bird. Posts show close-up wildlife photography and backyard sightings focused on young birds and grey-plumaged species. Standout entries include a warbling vireo waiting for a parent to bring food, a juvenile ruby-throated hummingbird with a single ruby feather, and a tawny frogmouth chick nicknamed Curious George photographed at the University of Queensland. Other contributions range from a big baby tree swallow to a recently fledged pine siskin under a feeder and a juvenile harpy eagle waiting in its nest.

I see quite a few herons on my walks but they are often too far away for me to get a good shot or I accidentally disturb them! Today at the very low River Wey in the middle of Farnham I came across this little one. #BirdoftheDay #50ShadesofGrey #photography

It didn’t seem at all bothered about me as it was intent on finding a fish. The river was crystal clear and very low. There were no signs of any fish there at all!

A Black-tailed Godwit stands in shallow blue water, its long, straight, slightly upturned pink-and-black bill pointing to the left. Its warm brown, intricately patterned plumage contrasts with its pale belly, while its long dark legs create gentle ripples around its feet. The calm water provides a striking, almost mirror-like reflection of the bird, stretching down beneath it and adding a lovely sense of symmetry to the photograph.

Interesting facts: Black-tailed Godwits are remarkable long-distance migrants, with some travelling thousands of kilometres between their breeding and wintering grounds. Their exceptionally long bills are perfectly adapted for probing deep into mud and soft ground for worms, insects and other invertebrates. They also have a distinctive black-and-white tail pattern, which gives them their name. In the UK and Ireland, they are particularly associated with wetlands, estuaries and coastal mudflats.
