Bird of the Day, theme 'Iridescence'

natureAug 18, 20261153,457

Bird of the Day is running the theme Iridescence, asking contributors to show birds with color-changing plumage. Today's gallery features glossy and metallic feathers captured in natural light, with many submissions highlighting starlings, grackles, hummingbirds, and tropical species. Standout examples include a Rainbow Bee-Eater (Merops ornatus) photographed in Long Pocket, Brisbane, a starling singing on a telephone line in golden hour light, and a Roseate Spoonbill tending its newborn chick. Expect close-up shots of shimmering heads and wings, sunlit perches, and parental scenes that emphasize iridescent color shifts.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Iridescence, The Alt theme is #Mothers Iโ€™ve chosen two glossy Ibises. Same type, different look! ๐Ÿชถ #birds #birding #BirdsSeenIn2026 #Spain #wildlife #photography #naturephotography #thelittlethings #ECK #TwosDay #TidesoutTuesday

Two brown ibises are standing in the dense, dry, beige-brown grass on the bank of a body of water. Both birds have the typical ibis build, with a long, slender beak that curves elegantly downwards. The bird on the left stands upright in profile, facing to the right, displaying its magnificent breeding plumage: a deep mahogany-brown body, combined with dark, iridescent wings that shimmer with a metallic green and reddish sheen in the sunlight. The bird on the right is slightly further in the foreground, turned slightly to the left and displaying its non-breeding or juvenile plumage. Its plumage is generally darker and duller, whilst its head and neck feature characteristic, fine light-grey streaking. In the background, the slightly blurred, grey-brown surface of the water can be seen.

๐Ÿชถ Rob has chosen #Iridescence as todayโ€™s #BirdOfTheDay theme. Alt. is #mothers, any female bird. My 1st thought on iridescent birds is the magnificent Starling, seen here singing on a telephone line in the golden hour. #birdphotography #ECK #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky #nature #wildlife

Two Starlings perched on a telephone line in the golden sunset. The birds are perched on two wires coiled together, which travels from the bottom right to the top left of the frame.
They are both facing the direction of the camera, and to the left slightly, so that the left side of their bodies can be seen.
The further left bird is looking away while the right hand bird has its head lifted in song with one eye on the camera.
Their glossy black plumage is shining with iridescent green in the setting sunshine, with a little blue on the right hand bird under the wing. They are peppered with white speckles and their yellow bills and legs are golden in the sunset.
The background is a uniform white sky
