Bird of the Day, alt theme 'Herons&Egrets'

natureAug 22, 202623014,326

Bird of the Day is a daily community event; today’s main theme is Colourful Characters and the alternate theme is Herons and Egrets. Contributions focus on herons and egrets in natural moments alongside colourful plumage shots, with wildlife photography and field scenes prevailing. Standouts show two young Pacific great blue heron siblings playing in their nest, a Great Egret tucking its head under its wing mid-preen, and cattle egrets and white-faced ibises foraging together in a flooded field. Other entries include a green heron perched above a trout pond and a named Gandalf the Grey Heron image.

The Purple Finch — almost living up to his colourful name. #Finches #ColourfulCharacters #BirdOfTheDay #nature #wildlife #photography 🪶

A Purple Finch looks back at us from his perch on a little dry branch. He’s partially obscured by some branches in the foreground, but being backlit the deeper shades of his intricate plumage are clearly on display.

#Birds Rob @robcrank68.bsky.social chose today's #BirdOfTheDay as #ColourfulCharacters, any bird with colourful plumage. I present to you, the handsome little male Common Yellowthroat.

A small bird perched on a bare diagonal branch against a background of blurred green & branches. The bird 's head is turned to the right, displaying a broad black mask topped by a white border. From the throat down, is a bright yellow, and the feet are a pinkish red.

What an incredible image! Well done!

Lizanne Flynn (we/ours)1

At least there are 2 of them. But who knows if more eggs were laid? Eggs are laid one at a time over a few days and hatch the same way. Usually 3-4 eggs. Some species of Birds, including Herons, practice fratricide/siblicide. The smaller/younger chick is pushed out of the nest or not fed.

I love their hair style! Makes me laugh and feel good every time I see them! 😂

That was a well-timed shot.

Sorely tempted was I to post another of my Rainbow Lorikeets, but resist did I. An #EasternRosella is as colourful. I think this fits the #ColourfulCharacters theme for #BirdOfTheDay. No, you were no help hanging out the washing. #Birds #ECK #Australiana

An Eastern Rosella sits on sloping spoke on a clothesline. The background is a blurred brick wall, green gutter, and terracotta roof tiles.

Eastern Rosellas are medium-sized colourful parrots with distinctive white cheek patches. It has a red head, neck and breast, with yellowish to greenish upper parts, a yellow underbody and a yellow-green to blue-green rump, with a red undertail. The shoulders are bright blue. Females are usually similar to males, but sometimes duller and young birds are even duller and can be aged by their bill colour, which is yellow or orange, changing to off-white when mature.

Magnificent capture, Audrey! I’m sorry that it wouldn’t help you hang your laundry but at least you had something beautiful to look at. 😁🕊️💛

A great egret walks by a great blue heron . The sun is rising and light is filtering through the trees behind them. The water splashed up by the egret walking is reflecting golden light

Nice one! Jealous as I've struggled to get any shot of these when I see them. They are always so flighty or obscured during the few encounters I've had with them.

What a stunning set Rob and, of course, there had to be a Kingfisher. Good job Legsy is away, attempting to regain his youth by driving around in circles in a tiny car. Thank for also including a #Robin #ForJanet. I hope you're coping with your own stressful situation.
