Bird of the Day is the daily community prompt; today's main theme is ColourfulCharacters, with an alternate theme Herons&Egrets. The gallery features brightly plumed subjects and waterbirds: Rainbow Lorikeets and a Victoria crowned pigeon show off vivid blues and maroon, while herons and egrets appear as a Little Egret working the shallows, a Grey Heron nicknamed Gandalf the Grey Heron, and a Great Blue Heron in flight. Other standout entries include a Scarlet Ibis, a pair of Kingfishers, a Cattle Egret photographed in Arrecife, and a Wilson's Phalarope shot from the sand. Portrait of a female Wilson's Phalarope on the edge of a shoreline in Saskatchewan, Canada. Phalaropes are an unusual family as the females are brighter and more colourful than the males. Once the female has laid her eggs she leaves the male to incubate them and goes off in search of another male.

I had been photographing American White Pelicans flying between their feeding area and nesting colony when a small group of Wilson's Phalaropes flew in and landed at my feet.
