Bird of the Day, theme 'Simple'

natureAug 23, 20261998,944

Bird of the Day is a daily community prompt with the theme Simple, asking contributors to show any bird against a simple background. Today's posts feature solitary, pared-back compositions of shorebirds, songbirds, raptors, and hummingbirds, often with muted tones or clean skies. Standout images include an egret hunting in the shadows, a Belted Kingfisher photographed from deep shade, and a Ruddy Turnstone from Washington state captured against a minimal backdrop. Other notable entries show a sea eagle skimming Vestfjorden in Lofoten, Norway, a Common Snipe with its reflection, and a pugnacious Anna's Hummingbird isolated on a plain background.

#Birds Atlantic Birding @atlanticbirding.bsky.social says today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #Simple; any bird against a simple background. A Belted Kingfisher, whose shot I only got because I was standing in deep shade when she flew in.

A mostly grey bird perched on a rough, grey weathered branch. Its back is to the camera, head turned to the right. It has an upright, untidy crest and a white collar. The blue/grey back has a sheen to it from the strong sunlight. The background is clear, bright blue sky.

They are such fun to watch but not easy at all to get good photos of. This is lovely.

Kingfishers are skittish and fast. I am having a difficult time getting a close up. They sense me coming a mile away. 😁

A real cutie. Nice photo. Chickadees are the best. (We've got the Chestnut-backed Chickadees here in Oakland, CA.)

Love em, here’s my rendition on an old wood plank

Hel Jel1

Whereabouts is this Julie? I don’t think we have chickadees in England… :( and would love to know where they are.

Lovely. I saw a turnstone on a bayside beach on Cape Cod this month, the first one I've seen in years. The last time I got a good shot of one was Sanibel Island.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Simple, any bird against a simple background. A beautiful Dickcissel (which I just read is part of the cardinal family!) singing its song.

Dickcissel with bright yellow, burgundy, black and white feathers sings as it perches on a bare branch.

Closeup of a sea eagle flying just above the waters of Vestfjorden. Lofoten, Norway, August 2026 As per @atlanticbirding.bsky.social's theme of #Simple for #BirdOfTheDay #ECK #Photography #Nature #Birds #Wildlife #Stunday

This image shows a closeup profile of a sea eagle flying just above the waters of Vestfjorden in the Lofoten Archipelago, having just snagged a bit of herring. The eagle appears primarily in the upper left half of the image, except for its head, which appears in the right center. Its wings are raised in a upstroke, its yellowish beak slightly open, and its eyes intensely focused. We have an excellent view of the brown, white and black feathers under its wing and on its neck, as well as the whitish brown feathers of its head. Its beak is sharply hooked, its eye brownish yellow, and it has a tuft of whiskers sticking down from its chin. The image is finished by the dark, rippling waters of Vestfjorden appearing in the upper right above the eagle's head and also in the lower right half of the frame.

Shiny little tree swallow with a #simple background. #BirdOfTheDay #eck 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) perched on a reddish rusty length of barbed wire against a blurred yellowish-green background. It faces forward with its head turned to the left, with a bright white underside and an iridescent teal-blue head and back that are shining in the sun. It has a very small, short black bill, dark round eyes, and small dark feet.

This isn't my best photo of a chestnut-backed chickadee (Poecile rufescens), but I like the soft lighting and the fall colors starting to appear in the background. #BirdOfTheDay #Paridae #Birds #Photography #EastCoastKin

A chestnut-backed chickadee (Poecile rufescens) perches on a tree branch. It's a small songbird in the tit family with a black cap and bib, white cheek patches, and reddish-brown back and flanks. The lighting is soft, with green maple leaves and pine needles in the midground and fall colors starting to appear in the blurred background.

A cedar waxwing bounces on a bridge railing as it hunts for insects above St. Vrain Creek in Longmont, Colorado. #Stunday #BirdOfTheDay #Simple #ECK #bird #birds #birdphotography #birdsofbluesky #BirdsSeenln2026 #nature #wildlife #wildlifephotography

Photo by Kort Duce A cedar waxwing bounces on a bridge railing as it hunts for insects above St. Vrain Creek in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal black-and-white photograph, a cedar waxwing appears in the left half of the frame in left profile as it hops along the railing. The high-contrast image creates a striking silhouette, with the sky appearing white to light gray while the bird and bridge railing running across the bottom of the frame are rendered in black. A simple and beautiful moment of a cedar waxwing using an urban bridge as a perch between hunting excursions, resting briefly within a riparian landscape vital to its existence.
