Bird of the Day, theme 'Woodland'

Today's Bird of the Day is a daily community event with the theme Woodland, any bird shown in a forest setting, with an alternate theme of Yellow. Gallery entries include forest songbirds and raptors photographed or sketched in trees and on the woodland floor, plus a few yellow-highlighted shots. Notable examples: a robin perched in an Irish woodland, a red-shouldered hawk camouflaged in Florida trees, and a long-tailed tit on a hazel branch in Denmark. Look for tawny owl roost photos, goldfinches on benches or zinnias, and kookaburras and tawny frogmouths captured in bushy, treed scenes.

A male Great Spotted Woodpecker perched on a small oak trunk in the forest. The bird is perched on a vertical branch which travels from the bottom of the frame, centre right, up towards the right hand corner of the shot. Its right side of its body can be seen. Its upper parts are black, with white patches at the sides of the head, side of the neck and top of the wings. It has a long, sharp bill and a red patch at the back of the neck. The underbelly is white.
There are some out of focus leaves in the foreground, giving a hazy effect on the shot and the background is out of focus green leaves with a few patches of light to the right.
