Addisu Gobena wins Sydney Marathon, sets course record

Ethiopian athlete Addisu Gobena won the 2026 Sydney Marathon in a course record 2:04:42, cutting more than one minute off last year’s winning time. The first wave of 40,000 runners started at 6:15am on the 42.2-kilometre route from North Sydney to the Opera House. Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir won the women's race in 2:18:31, just nine seconds slower than last year’s women's course mark. Wheelchair races also produced records with the USA's Daniel Romanchuk finishing in 1:26:50 and Paralympic athlete Manuela Schär the first female wheelchair finisher in 1:42:04; Schär is the first athlete to complete all four marathon majors. The event is in its second year as an Abbott World Marathon Major and organisers warned of widespread road closures, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge closed until 11am and major roads such as Oxford Street, Flinders Street and Anzac Parade affected; extra public transport services were provided for the morning.
