BBC has published a gallery of images from the Italian Grand Prix at Monza as Formula 1 teams gather at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza for this weekend's race. Monza has hosted more Formula 1 races than any other circuit, staging grands prix in all but one year since the inaugural 1950 season; it was absent only in 1980 for renovation. Located in a royal park and surrounded by woodland, Monza is known as the cathedral of speed and is the spiritual home of Ferrari and the devoted tifosi. The circuit was where the first world championship was decided 76 years ago and last year hosted Max Verstappen's fastest-ever qualifying lap in F1. Across decades Monza has produced thrilling finishes, Ferrari glory, title wins, controversy and tragedy, and the gallery traces those moments through historic and recent photographs.

What was your favourite tobacco livery? The Belgian Grand Prix was scheduled to run #OnThisDay, 31 August 2003, but was removed from the calendar due to a dispute over tobacco advertising. #f1 #formula1 #OTD

Painted in the colours of Gunston cigarettes, a privately entered Brabham with John Love at the 1968 South African Grand Prix became the first team to paint their cars in the livery of their sponsors.

I think the JPS can't be matched. Can't believe it's coming up on 40 years since we last saw it in a Grand Prix. Throwing this into the conversation though.

Different era, but I always liked the Gitanes Ligier

Remembering Bruce McLaren, born #OnThisDay in ’37. Pic: at Sebring in ’59 he became the youngest #F1 GP winner, a record that was finally broken 44 years later by Fernando Alonso in Budapest, then by Seb Vettel at Monza in 2008, then again by Max Verstappen in Barcelona in 2016. #AnorakFact
