Orioles claim outfielder Luis Robert Jr. off Mets waivers

sportsAug 31, 202623326

The Baltimore Orioles claimed outfielder Luis Robert Jr. off waivers from the New York Mets. Robert hit 10 home runs and posted a .702 OPS across 58 games with the Mets this season. The Orioles will assume roughly $3 million remaining on his contract, a figure that includes a $2 million buyout if they decline his $20 million option for 2027. The move is surprising given Baltimore's crowded outfield and Robert's third straight season of diminished production coupled with a lengthy injury history. Baltimore could insert Robert into Christian Franklin's role or use him in a platoon in center with Colton Cowser, with alternative alignments involving Dylan Beavers, Leody Taveras, Heston Kjerstad, or calling up Enrique Bradfield Jr. when rosters expand on September 1. Robert recorded an .841 OPS in August, which the Orioles may view as reason to gamble despite health concerns.

The Orioles are taking on a $4.9 million payment obligation to rent Luis Robert Jr. for about four weeks. That's certainly a choice. bsky.app/profile/them...
