Bird of the Day, theme 'Flower Power'

Bird of the Day is running the theme Flower Power, asking for any bird capture with a flower in view, with an alternate theme BirdsOfAFeather for flock shots. Entries today feature single birds posed with blooms and group scenes of migrating or foraging birds. Look for a Grey Heron and a Barn Owl flying through a meadow, a Puffin photographed with a daisy and another Puffin holding thrift in its beak, a Little Wattlebird among Coral tree blossoms and a Ruby-throated Hummingbird visiting flowers. Other highlights include a Stonechat perched on willowherb, an American Goldfinch on a Cup Plant, a Eurasian Coot chick with buttercups, and flocks of Sanderling and cormorants under the alternate theme.

A small flock of ten Sanderling foraging along the surf line of the shore. The birds are along the centre of the shot, slightly lower on the left than the right. They are mostly facing the camera (two are not), and turned in various directions as they search for food.
The birds are bright white with silver-grey on the head, neck, back and wings. They have long, narrow, black beaks and black legs.
The bright sunshine coming in from the right gives their pale plumage a very bright appearance and their reflections can be seen in the wet sand in front of them.
The beach in the foreground is covered with thick seaweed along the right hand corner of the shot and sand covered in a this film of water as it approaches the sea. The surf is only a few centimetres high and runs along the same line as the birds. The background is a calm, out of focus sea.
