Once I trick the BBC into letting me make Doctor Who I'm just gonna make Time Cheers and have the Tardis be a silly bar where historical figures and future guys and monsters walk in and do little comedy bits and even though there's only one set the budget is unchanged I simply pocket the rest

Shower thought: I’d probably actually be VERY OKAY with the Leverage team pitching to take on Doctor Who. They work on a strict budget, including effects/fight scenes, the characterization, writing and directing is TIGHT. Plus: Gina Bellman as the Doctor. Let’s go steal a TARDIS?

Kit Author2I would too. I also feel like they understand the whimsy yet serious tone that Dr Who is good at using without being overly preachy (see Whittaker era). I suppose it could be too close to the Librarians in premise, but as I love the Librarians, I wouldn't mind at all.

When I worked on Doctor Who it was a very frugal production. Mostly filmed in cheap locations to avoid building sets. Barely any VFX budget. No overtime ever. They considered it a kids show. These “cinematic” shows the BBC wants? They cost a fortune. The BBC doesn’t have that kind of money.
Mark Spatny4That said, it was a fantastic show. Because they had amazing casts and wildly talented writers and directors who could pull off wonders on the cheap. Saul Metzstein, who I worked with on the series 7 finale, just won an Emmy for Slow Horses. They need to recreate that formula. Forget “cinematic”.
G1I love when I can tell a sci-fi show was made on a budget - you can tell that the people working in it were passionate about the story and there are always fun little anecdotes about how the crew made things happen that don't boil down to "expensive and time consuming cgi effects"
