Bird of the Day, theme 'Paridae'

Bird of the DaySep 18, 20261888,649

A collared dove hovering above its partner on a garden chair favoured the alternate pigeons-and-doves reading. It asked for any of the Tit, Titmice and Chickadees. Others delivered intimate Paridae portraits: a black-capped chickadee framed by a curving branch and a tufted titmouse perched with an acorn.

A photo of a black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) perched on a thin vertical forked branch, facing the camera with its head turned slightly to one side. It is a very small songbird with a black cap and throat bib separated by a broad white cheek patch, a short dark bill, and pale buff-washed white underparts that look fluffed out against the cold. Its dark feet grip the rough bark, and the background is a soft wash of warm orange and brown

There's a beautiful pale blue outline around its eyes and at the beginning of its beak. The right foot is missing all of its toes and left is missing some. The bird is mostly facing the camera but the head is turned to the left.

A Collared Dove perched on the stump of a palm tree in a park. The bird is left of centre of the shot, sitting on the stump of a limb of a palm tree. It is facing right so that its right side is showing. It is a medium sized bird with pale grey-beige plumage and a thin black beak. It has a dark red eye and a black collar on the nape of the neck. The outer wingtips have a grey outline. It’s deer can be seen partially hanging over the stump and appear a darkish colour. The tail is obscured. Behind the dove another palm trunk with a light, sandy appearance travels from the bottom left to top left of the frame, tilted slightly left as it goes up. The background is palm leaves, out of focus, taking up the entire scene with white light visible through the gaps.

Monochrome photo of a silhouetted pigeon about to land on a tv aerial. The pigeon is on the left side of the frame, facing right, wings outstretched at ‘10 to 2’, head and neck craning forwards, and feet dangling down. It is making the last beat of its wings before it lands on its perch. The tv aerial has two horizontal wire sections attached to a central vertical stem. There is nothing else in the photo, just a nondescript greyish sky behind

This is a beautiful, close-up photograph of a pigeon resting peacefully on a railing, captured from a slightly low angle that highlights its gentle dignity. The pigeon is positioned in the center of the frame, facing away but turning its head gracefully to the left to look back. Its plumage is a rich, layered tapestry of deep charcoal grays and slate blues, with the feathers on its back appearing incredibly soft and downy. Towards the base of its back, there is a striking contrast where a few pure white feathers emerge, neatly tucked against the darker gray tail feathers that drape straight down. The bird's head is beautifully detailed, showcasing a slender, dark grey beak with a soft white patch where it meets the face. Its most captivating feature is its eye—a bright, luminous ring of vibrant orange-red that stands out brilliantly against its dark feathers, conveying a sense of quiet alertness and curiosity. A delicate hint of iridescence catches the light along the back of its neck, hinting at the glossy purples and greens typical of these resilient birds. The pigeon is perched on a clean, white horizontal railing, with just its bright pinkish-red claws visible grasping the edge. The railing has a series of small, neat circular cutouts along its lower portion. Behind the bird, the background is a soft, completely blurred wash of vibrant early autumn greens and hints of yellow, a lush canopy of trees. This gentle bokeh effect makes the dark, velvety colors of the pigeon stand out beautifully.

A long-tailed tit (Paridae) perches on a fat green tree branch with the tree's waxy leaves in the background of the image, but not in focus. The branch diagonally crosses the frame from the bottom left corner to the top right corner, with a few offshoots coming from it, some of which are in focus while others are not. The long-tailed tit is smaller than a robin with a tiny, stubby black beak, black eye, and a tail that is as long as his body, if not longer. He sits in profile, facing left. He has a thin brown line right around the top of his eye that looks like eyeliner. There is also a dark stripe of plumage above his eye that meets another black line across the back of his throat and a third black line running down the outside length of his wings and down his long tail feathers. His crown is pale, with a patch of tan plumage near his beak. His cheeks are streaked pale and dark, while his throat is a pale buff color. His breast is a slightly deeper buff color, and it looks as though the feathers of his neck and breast are slightly puffed.
