A violet-green swallow, head tucked under its open wing on a thin branch, prompted domestic personification and comic self-consciousness. Others favoured situational or dialogic humour: a roseate spoonbill at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and two great tits trading a seed and an ant. The theme asked for a bird photo that made you smile with only a witty caption.

A western grebe (top) and Clark’s grebe (bottom) are holding each other’s beaks while swimming in a pond. Both birds have a white front, black top of head and back of neck, red eyes and gray back. Here we have Charlie & Caitlin Cattle Egrets with Kermit the Frog, and Charlie was saying to Kermit that if he didn't eat him, Caitlin would bash his head in before eating him. So Charlie did the decent thing and dispatched Kermit while he was still alive to stop him suffering. Captured at WWT Martin Mere.

This is a mated pair of great egrets. The males gather large sticks for nest building. This male brought a wilted leaf to his wife and she appears to be complaining.

Perched on a gnarly, weathered tree branch that cuts diagonally across the frame, this magnificent Australian Darter bird has thrown both wings wide open like dramatic velvet capes to brake against the air. Its slender, snake-like neck and dagger-like yellow bill are held with laser-focused poise, while its bright, alert eye tracks the final inch of touchdown. The buff-coloured chest and intricate dark wing feathers contrast sharply against the gray water and soft-focus, misty shoreline in the background. It's caught mid-stride lifting one comically large, fully splayed orange webbed foot in the air before it makes contact with the bark.
