Bird of the Day, theme 'Black & White'

natureOct 1, 20261023,259

Today's Bird of the Day is a Black and White theme set by Atlantic Birding, asking for any bird shots presented in monochrome with an alternate Vivid theme. Contributors shared high-contrast portraits and action shots, favoring corvids and seabirds as well as owls rendered in classic mono. Notable entries include a closeup Great Grey Owl portrait in black and white, a Common Raven caught in flight, and a Guillemot twisting its neck against a moody sky. Expect pared-back compositions, strong light and shadow, and a handful of vivid-colour alternates shown as the theme's counterpart.

🪶 Good Morning and Happy Thursday Everyone! Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #Black&White; any shot in black and white Alt. is #Vivid; any bird with bright colours - A close up, B&W shot of a Common Raven in Flight #birds #ECK #birdphotography #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #ThursJay

A close up shot of a Raven in flight, in side profile. The bird takes up most of the frame and is flying from left to right, so that its right side is visible. It has a strong, thick bill which is slightly hooked at the end. Its wings are in an upward beat and end in splayed fingers. Its tail is almost a single feather thick. The background is a grey-white, uniform sky.

Good morning AB and a happy new month to you. Splendid shot of a Raven but I suspect it might take issue with being described as Common. "Nevermore, call me by that name, human. The consequences will be deathly." I'm sure Edgar Allan Poe wrote that. 😁

Great shot and themes AB 👏

Vibrant you say @atlanticbirding.bsky.social? Well, you know what's coming ... a #RainbowLorikeet of course. These vibrant beauties certainly brighten up any day. My 'feathered rainbows'. #BirdOfTheDay #Black&White: Main theme #Vivid: Alt theme #Birds #ECK #Australia

A Rainbow Lorikeet sits on a cross branch in front of a background of a green bushy tree. The rainbow lorikeet is a vibrant parrot about 30 cm long, known for its colourful plumage, which includes a blue head and tummy, red curved beak, green wings, and an orange-yellow breast. They are highly social and energetic birds, often found in flocks, and primarily feed on nectar and pollen.

When they said vivid, you’re not kidding! What a gorgeous beauty and your photo does it justice.

Great choice , I debated between a lorikeet and the warbler I posted . Yours looks great 😍

A black and white photo of a grey heron (Ardea cinerea) perched on a bare, leafless branch that rises diagonally from a weathered snag at the lower left. The tall wading bird stands in profile facing right, with a long neck that's slightly curved, a dark stripe above its eye, and a long dagger-like bill. The tree's dark, branching limbs stand out against a soft, pale backdrop of a foggy hillside.

Lovely shot. They're one of those birds that always look awkwardly out of place in a tree.

Sometimes, your shadow needs to get away. For the #birdoftheday theme of #black&white #birds #raven #protectnature #EastCoastKin

Two Ravens at the top of a pole. One is sitting and looking to the side. The sun is hitting its feathers highlighting its wing and beak. The second raven is flying off the pole.

Atlantic Birding’s #BirdOfTheDay theme today is: #Black&White; any shot in black and white Alt. is #Vivid; any bird with bright colours I’ve chosen this black and white photo of a Guillemot. I love the way it is twisting its neck, showing its distinctive head shape against the lighter, moody sky.

A Guillemot stands on a rock face, twisting its head to the left. It is black and white in colour with a moody lighter sky behind it.
