Bird of the Day, theme 'Best Beaks'

natureOct 2, 20261324,836

Today's Bird of the Day is a daily community event with the theme #BestBeaks, chosen by Helen. Photographers and birders posted images highlighting striking bills and bold profiles, from close side profiles and feeding shots to brightly colored beaks. Standout entries show a hornbill in Kenya and a Southern Yellow-Billed Hornbill in Namibia, a toucan captured in Shropshire UK, a long-billed curlew at Monterey Bay California, and a black skimmer feeding in the shallows at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Look for vivid colors, dramatic bill shapes, and feeding or profile compositions under #BestBeaks.

My #birdoftheday #bestbeaks is this White-throated Kingfisher taken in Thailand. One of the best beaks on a Kingfisher for sure. #birds #birdphotography

Hornbill in Kenya fits the...bill. Should see a few of these guys/gals today! #BirdOfTheDay #BestBeaks #YellowElements 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a yellow-billed hornbill (Tockus flavirostris) perched on a slender horizonal tree branch holding a bright green praying mantis in its large bill. It's a medium-sized black and white hornbill with spotted upper wings, a long black tail, and a long, thick yellow-orange downcurving beak with a black stripe through the center of it. It has pale yellow irises and black and white streaking on its head. There are green leafy branches in the foreground, and it's backlit by warm-hued sunlight with a pale blue clear sky in the background behind it.

🤣 Cool shot. Love the insect that's about to become lunch.

Broseph T. Joe1

I can definitely see Zazu in this bird.

SaraG1

Really nice capture, HLK! I hope you see some.

Neil Cameron1

That definitely fits the theme! I wonder if it beaked the insect's curiosity... I'll be here all week folks. Don't forget to tip your server.

Today’s theme by Helen for #BirdOfTheDay is #BestBeaks. So here is what I consider one of the most striking and colourful beaks in the bird world that I’ve captured, the Toucan #birds #thegardenjungle #wildlifephotography #birdwatching #shropshire #UKwildlife #birdphotography #canon #photography

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestBeaks. This black skimmer fed in the shallows of beautiful St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. They are numerous now with many hundreds of them hanging out in Lighthouse Pond. #photography #wildlife #ECK #birds #BirdsInFlight #birdsky #birders #conservation

A bill with a built-in sunrise. 😃 Helen’s pick for #BirdOfTheDay is #BestBeaks #Birds #ECK #CommonGallinule

Close-up of a common gallinule at the water’s edge, its dark charcoal-gray head and neck bent downward as it drinks. Its long, pointed beak is vivid red near the face, fading through orange to a bright yellow tip touching the water. A small red ring surrounds its eye. The bird’s beak and head are reflected in the calm blue-gray water, broken by gentle ripples.

Today's Alt #BirdOfTheDay is #YellowElements the colour yellow found on a bird set by @helenbennett.bsky.social - the clue is in the title for this beauty - The Yellowhammer - a red listed bird in the U.K. but doing quite well over The Vale of Glamorgan - S. Wales 🪶🦉 #birdingwales #ukbirding #ECK

Helen's #BirdOfTheDay choice is #BestBeaks; a bird with a beak/bill with striking colours, bold profiles or an interesting shape. Alt. is #YellowElements; the colour yellow found on a bird. #EastCoastKin #Wildlife #Nature #Birds #Photography Does yellow inside the bird count?
